dalek artcotic tee artIn 2008 I was the Art Director for an apparel line called Artcotic which we made with Huge Brands. Here is some of the t-shirt art that was created and interviews that were on the website.

James “Dalek” Marshall interview by Alex Lodermeier / ARTCOTIC (Interview from 2008)

ARTCOTIC: …DISEASE

DALEK:  Its a complex discussion…visually as soon as I think about it my head gets clogged…it’s amazing to think about the body as an organism…and then how that body is developed…how it reacts to its environment…and how on different levels it navigates through things…its also interesting how we evolve…or fail to do so as we are introduced to new things in the environment…. mutations…

It’s horrifying to see how disease takes people over…and how it impacts families…but at the same time its amazing to see how people rise to the occasion…and handle things under intense pressure…it gives you some hope for humanity…

And of course there is the dark reality that disease is absolutely necessary in our world…its part of a checks and balances system…its horrible to think of…as god forbid any person by struck by disease…but with no natural predators…aside ourselves…disease…war…natural disaster…and general stupidity are the only things keeping us from consuming the entire planet…when we reach that point…things will be far uglier than anything we can imagine…

ARTCOTIC: …COMMERCIALISM

DALEK:  It’s a way of life… commerce makes the world go round…without it…where would we be…are there bad aspects to it…sure…but to everything there is…balance is key …think about brands like coca cola…its like its own universal language…a grounding point…. you could be in the jungles of Asia…you’ll find some…

Humans are consumers…that’s what we do…

ARTCOTIC: …MUSIC

DALEK:  Its good stuff….keeps me grounded…in a lot of ways its how I stay attached to the outside world while I’m sitting in the studio working by myself… It gave me direction and purpose as a teen…it evokes memories of good and bad times…it motivates…it gives energy…. It’s enjoyable…

I think I have about 2000 cds…and then about the same amount of vinyl…I grew up on AC/DC and zepplin…all that good stuff in the 70’s…The Cars…the police…ZZ Top…then in the early 80’s got into punk…then hip hop…then pretty much everything …now I’ve pretty much reverted back to listening to maiden and ZZ Top…Rush…all of that…with the occasional riff of Integrity or Agnostic front…

Favorite music in rotation of bands currently…Internal Affairs out of
LA… that’s good stuff… Career Suicide…Rzl dzl…Blacklisted….Municipal Waste…Hammer Bros…the new Exodus is really good…. crushing…

I try to stop buying music…but I can’t… and I can’t go digital…I’ve
tried…I like to have the physical object…cd’s do suck…but…what can you do…I always think…what if I lose my hard drive…if everything is on a computer…and you lose it… You gotta go back to ground 1… at least with the cd’s I can reburn…

And vinyl is the best…I get sucked in by the pretty colors…and the
artwork…that was definitely my first pull into wanting to make art…LP
covers…anyways….

ARTCOTIC: …SPORTS

DALEK:  Oh I love sports…just about anything and everything….I even found myself getting into cricket my last trip to the UK…baseball is my favorite…followed by NFL…then college basketball…soccer…golf…skateboarding…what have you…

I grew up a Dallas cowboys fan…which of course was a good thing in the 70’s…although I must say I had a pretty profound respect for the Iron Curtain…the Steelers of the 70’s were awesome…Rocky Blier…Franco Harris…mean Joe Greene…Bradshaw…

As much as I love a particular team…I’m always more into individual athletes…growing up watching baseball…I was into the Red Sox and Yankees…we lived in conn…right between them both…Carl Yaztremski was my favorite player Carlton Fisk…Jim Rice…Fred Lynn…but I also loved Thurman Munson…Graig Nettles…Mickey rivers…there were a lot of great players in that era…

I played baseball from about the time I was 5 …through 9th grade…then I got into skateboarding…and that was that for a while…now that I have kids I am getting back into playing ball…I spend a fair amount of time at Shea Stadium…I’m a Mets fan these days…not a good thing to be after last years performance at the end…and Glavine…good love him…man…that was hard to watch….

Skateboarding played a pretty big role in my teen life…20’s as well…it sort of went hand in hand with punk back in the 80’s…those things together formed so much of who I was…and probably still am…I laugh when I push around the neighborhood now…we used to skate for miles…all day…and never get tired…I push 3 blocks anymore I could fall over…I need to get outside more…

ARTCOTIC: …EVOLUTION

DALEK:  Speaks for itself I guess…its an interesting time…as I think modern evolution is actually a state of devolution…but it may also be a sorting period…I do believe in survival of the fittest…and I don’t mean fit as in physically strong…but more overall strength…smarts…adaptability…enlightenment…the ability to override the banter of agenda and make moves in a positive direction…I think our planet could stand a cleansing…there are a lot of shitheads in the world that need to be evaporated…

ARTCOTIC: …GRAFFITI

DALEK:  It’s another one of those scenes that grounded me…a community that gave me skill sets I needed for life…I love graffiti…most of it anyways…like anything there is graf that I don’t find appealing…and people I don’t care for…but overall I’ve met some of my best friends through it…and still enjoy seeing it as much as possible…

ARTCOTIC: …LOVE

DALEK:  It’s quite important I think…love…passion for what you’re doing…and who you know…and the process of living …life without love is pretty pointless…

ARTCOTIC: …COLOR

DALEK:  I like it…

ARTCOTIC: …SOCIETY

DALEK:  Don’t like it as much…it’s a good overall idea…and I have been blessed enough to have more good experiences than bad…. but there are too many people that for whatever reason can’t seem to figure out that the world is bigger than themselves…too many people with a lack of respect for life and peoples differences…it’d be nice if people pulled their heads out of their asses…and focused on being a better member of society…

Embrace the larger you…

ARTCOTIC: …THE FUTURE

DALEK:  I’d like to say space ships and silver jump suits…unfortunately I think It’ll look more like the john carpenter classic escape from ny….or They Live…John Carpenter is awesome…George Romero too…the future might look like that…

It goes back to the larger society question….if we can move past the little bullshit…and operate as a larger unit to make the adjustments to save our planet and species…we’ll be fine…the chances of that happening seem slim…I mean there are pockets of people making the right moves…and hopefully it gathers strength…and it would be nice if the evolutionary state erases the asswipes…

More action…less talk…less bleeding hearts…more authority and accountability…
