Cal McDonald Detective Tales Bloody Pulp Books

I met writer Steve Niles while I was working on David Arquette’s “Tripper” movie as he was an executive producer on the film. For years we brewed around on how a graphic designer and comic book writer could collaborate on a project. In 2011 we figured we create a indie book company called “Bloody Pulp Books” and I created the skull typewriter logo. For our first book we decided to take Steve’s character that he created “Cal McDonald” and publish a pulp style paperback. We had the amazing artist Kelley Jones illustrate the book for us. As far as the design aspect of the book I wanted to make it look raw. When I scanned Kelley’s original art I kept in most of the pencil lines to give it a rough punk zine type feel to it. We published 2000 books and in the beginning the books came in a bag with evidence tape across it with hand rubber stamped art in the front pages. For more info on our releases: Bloody Pulp Books.
